Haaretz In New York
6:30 PM – 9:00 PM
Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan
A special Haaretz event in JCC Manhattan, in partnership with JStreet and the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI), will bring together voices from Israel and the U.S. to explore the challenges and responsibilities facing liberal democratic societies today — and to examine the intensity of the threat to Israel's present and future as a liberal democracy.
The evening event, featuring addresses, one-on-one conversations, and a panel discussion with key players, experts, and activists in a range of fields, will explore the current threats to an already fragile Israeli democracy, during wartime and after. It will focus on the urgent need to defend core democratic institutions — an independent judiciary, a free press, and civil rights for all citizens.
What does it mean for Israel to remain a democratic state in practice, not just in name? How are civil liberties and human rights being challenged, especially during the Gaza war, and what role do civil society, political leadership, and international partners play in safeguarding them? And why is the struggle for democracy in Israel not only a local issue, but one of global relevance?
